How to Manage Stress: 6 Tips

Managing stress is a challenge when you constantly feel like you’re putting out the next “fire” at work or overwhelmed by unfinished tasks? Modern life can be stressful, but how much of that stress comes from the pressure we put on ourselves?

We all like to feel challenged to some extent — it keeps us interested and engaged. But when stress becomes too much, we feel like we’re not coping. How can we find balance?

Many life events are inevitable, yet you'll be surprised by how much is actually within your control. Here's what you can do to free yourself from stress:

1. Find the balance

Are you working to live, or living to work? Even the most highly motivated people need balance in their lives. With the lines between personal life and work becoming increasingly blurred, setting boundaries is more important than ever. If you see your free-time activities as optional extras, you might be setting yourself up for trouble. Ensure you dedicate enough time to rest and relax. Whether it's personal or work-related, write down all your commitments in your planner. So, if you've promised to be home for dinner or go for a run, schedule it. This will help you keep your life in balance.

2. Reduce the load

Too many tasks on your plate? Take a look at your to-do list and identify what truly needs to get done and what isn’t essential. Decide which tasks can wait or even be removed entirely. If a task feels overwhelming, break it down into smaller steps. And if something requires your full focus, turn off your phone notifications while you work.

3. Take a break

Working nonstop might seem like the best way to get everything done, but chances are you’ll end up accomplishing less. Research shows we perform better when we take short, regular breaks. Use this time to move around, rest your eyes, or have some tea or water—don’t start working on something else. Do one thing today mindfully. Sit with your coffee and really enjoy it. Take a walk around your neighborhood and notice if anything new has appeared.

4. Assert your baudaries

Sometimes, no matter how efficient we are, the demands on us can be too high. Know your limits and have the confidence to say “no.” And don’t feel like you have to do everything yourself. Delegating is a strength, not a weakness, and a way to give others a chance to shine and grow. You don’t need to respond instantly when someone asks something of you. Tell them you’ll get back to them, and use that time to consider your answer. If needed, think of an alternative proposal that makes it easier for you to say “no.”

5. Change your way of thinking

Sometimes, stress can come from ourselves—a product of what’s happening in our minds. Maybe you’re a perfectionist, worrying about details no one else will notice, and criticizing yourself for anything that doesn’t meet your high standards. Or perhaps you spend your time worrying about things beyond your control. Working effectively means knowing when to let go of control. Accept that there will always be things outside your influence. Focus on what you can control, like how you respond to situations, instead of wasting energy on things you cannot.

6. Take care of yourself

Taking care of yourself makes it less likely that you’ll crumble under pressure. This doesn’t necessarily require a complete lifestyle overhaul. Even small things can lift your mood, help you relax, and give you a boost of energy. Consider what you’re putting your mind and body through, and treat rest and relaxation as a necessity, not a luxury you can’t afford. Find activities and people that bring you joy and satisfaction, and savor them. Take a walk in the park, exercise, or enjoy a tasty, nutritious meal.
