The Vagus Nerve: Key to Calmness – Science, Neuroscience, and Myths

“Stimulate your vagus nerve!” “Achieve calm in just 3 minutes a day!” “Release your trauma in 21 days without therapy!” – these are just some of the promises you might see in social media ads claiming to reveal the secret to managing stress and a range of physical and mental health issues. But is it really true?

Stress is an inevitable part of our daily lives, and the search for effective methods to relax and reduce tension is more relevant than ever. Amid the sea of wellness coaches and techniques for achieving well-being, the vagus nerve is often mentioned as a key element—and sometimes even portrayed as a panacea for inner calm. 

Let’s take a closer look at what’s really behind these claims—what the vagus nerve actually is, its role in the body, and whether we can truly “stimulate” it ourselves to “regulate our nervous system.”

What is the vagus nerve, and what is its function in the body?

The vagus nerve, also known as the wandering nerve (from the Latin vagus – wandering), is one of the ten cranial nerves in our body. It starts from the brainstem and “wanders” down to the heart, lungs, stomach, intestines, and other organs.

The vagus nerve is part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). – the system that regulates everything we don’t consciously think about: heart rate, digestion, breathing, and even some immune responses.

It is a main part of the parasympathetic nervous system – the branch of the ANS that tells the body, “stop, relax, recover.” We can think of it as the body’s natural switch, 

And here’s the key point: the vagus nerve functions involuntarily. This means we don’t have direct control over it, unlike muscles we use for walking or speaking. It simply does its work in the background, without our conscious involvement.

Vagus nerve stimulation

The scientific community has long been interested in the possibility of influencing the vagus nerve through electrical stimulation. This procedure, called vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), is primarily used for the treatment of medication-resistant epilepsy and major depression.

How does it work? A small device (similar to a pacemaker) is implanted, sending mild electrical impulses to the nerve. In some patients, this can reduce the frequency of seizures or improve mood in people with treatment-resistant depression.

Of course, this is not something you can buy online or safely try at home without medical supervision—and it’s not without side effects. There are also non-invasive devices for vagus nerve stimulation. Their proven benefits include relief from headaches, certain gastrointestinal symptoms, and neuropathic pain (pain related to nerve damage). Evidence for effects on mood and cognitive function is still limited.

But what happens outside the clinical setting—in the world of wellness practices and online advice?

What about “self-stimulation”? And what does neuroscience say about it?

But what’s the real truth? Some of these methods do indeed have a potential effect by triggering the body’s relaxation response.Neuroscientific research shows that focused attention on the breath and body can help regulate the autonomic nervous system by activating its parasympathetic branch. Taking a little time for yourself during a stressful situation and focusing on your breathing can indeed make you feel temporarily better. 

But to say that we directly stimulate the vagus nerve is an overstatement. Because there is no data nor for whether it’s actually possible to stimulate it this way, nor for any potential benefits of such “stimulation.”

The practices listed above can help with mood regulation, but they are not a magic solution for all our problems. They are certainly not a “quick fix” either—the effects come with time and practiceand not in five minutes under a cold shower.

So what can we actually do?

If you feel that your body is constantly in “fight or flight” mode, the first step is to notice it.From there, the well-known steps follow:

  • Take care to maintain regular exercise, sleep, nutrition, and social connections.
  • Find yourself rituals, which the body associates with calm—these don’t necessarily have to be “by the book.”
  • And most importantly – don't blame yourselfthat you’re not “zen” 24/7. Neither the vagus nerve nor life responds on command.

Stress is a part of life

I often meet people who believe they should be calm and balanced all the time. The reality is a bit different. Stress is natural and can even be beneficial in certain moments. It mobilizes us, making us more persistent and active. The goal isn’t to “eliminate” stress, but to be able to return to calm and balance when the situation calls for it. This requires consistency and a holistic approach, because mental health depends on many factors—biological, psychological, and social.

In summary

Many people expect that a few simple tricks will “tune” their nervous system and eliminate stress forever. The truth is, our bodies are far more complex than that. That’s why it’s important to check the information and sources you rely on. Remember, real science is full of nuances, and there’s no panacea for all our problems and challenges.

Neuroscience doesn’t offer magical solutions, but it provides insight into the complex connection between the brain, body, and mental health—and this understanding can serve as our compass in the pursuit of well-being. Without flashy claims or grand promises, it often proves to be our strongest ally.
