Is work-life balance possible? One of the most sought-after topics in corporate training is exactly this. Many of us want time for ourselves and our loved ones, while also performing well at work. This balance is highly desired, yet often difficult to achieve.
Why is it difficult to achieve work-life balance?
Of course, time—or the lack of it—is a key factor. It’s undeniable that if we’re busy with work all day, on top of additional personal and household responsibilities, the time left for ourselves and our loved ones is quite limited. On the other hand, if we want to dedicate most of our day to family, loved ones, or simply enjoyable activities, it can lead to a lack of work results and career growth.
Another essential resource for maintaining this balance is our energy—both physical and mental. If we’re constantly overloaded and exhausted, we lack the capacity to complete our work tasks effectively or to take good care of ourselves and our loved ones. Constant stress and a never-ending list of tasks are a recipe for burnout.
Another factor that significantly challenges this balance is high demands. These can come from anywhere—very often, they stem from social expectations—to fulfill all the roles assigned to us, and to do so at a high level.
They can also come from the nature of our work and the workplace culture. Of course, our loved ones—partners, children, friends—also have their own needs, desires, and expectations of us.
These can also be our own demands on ourselves—our needs, goals, aspirations, and desires. The ambition to grow professionally and achieve success, to have financial stability, and to do work that fulfills us. At the same time, we want to spend time with loved ones, rest, live an exciting and interesting life, and take care of ourselves, our home, and our peace of mind.
Do we need more time to achieve a work-life balance?
Sure, having more time might make us feel freer and lighter. We might also get a lot more done. But the truth is, no matter how much time we have, if we’re anxious, not present, and not aligned with what we’re doing, we won’t feel any sense of balance. If we were in the Maldives but constantly thinking about what’s happening at the office, would we feel satisfied? Of course, time management is an invaluable skill and can help us, but it isn’t the main key to balance.
So, how is it possible to achieve balance then?
We can’t achieve this balance every single moment. However, we can take conscious steps toward improving it, so we feel more fulfilled. Here are some of them:
Connect with your values and needs
The more aware we are of what is important to us and why, the less stress each of our decisions brings. When we understand why we take a certain action and what it brings us, it becomes much easier to prioritize and feel fulfilled and balanced. This also enhances our sense of value and personal effectiveness—both at work and in our personal lives.
Take care of your energy levels
Quality time is far more valuable than the number of hours we spend on an activity. Time spent being connected with ourselves and our loved ones, and doing work well, is what we should aim for. And quality only emerges when we have the resources to create it. That’s why you should make sure that the activities that energize you are at least as many as the ones that drain you.
Set clear boundaries.
If we’re constantly thinking about home tasks while at work, and checking work emails when we’re at home, balance will inevitably blur, and the end result won’t be fulfillment. It’s important to be able to separate work time from personal time, even if the hours sometimes vary.
Develop flexibility
Set realistic expectations
There will be days, weeks, or months when not everything goes as we want. Sometimes we’ll make mistakes at work, and other times we’ll miss an important event for our child. If we expect ourselves to be perfect in every role and situation, we will inevitably become overwhelmed. It’s important to remind ourselves that we’re not machines and to aim for fulfillment, not perfection.
Resolve your inner conflicts and act in harmony with yourself
Balance isn’t a one-time solution; it’s a matter of ongoing choices. Many of these choices are difficult and create significant internal conflicts. That’s why it’s so important to learn how to resolve these conflicts and find the right, balanced solution for ourselves.
